Honoring Coaching Legend Barbara Trompeter
“A good coach improves your game, but a great coach improves your life.” This quote is a perfect description of the impact Coach Barbara Trompeter had on her St. Leonard volleyball players.
Our parish is excited to honor Barbara Trompeter at this year’s Homecoming Celebration as one of the incredibly special coaches we were so fortunate to have at St. Leonard School. She successfully coached the girls volleyball teams for over 15 years, from 1964 – 1981, and won a city championship! She did all of this while raising her own family of five daughters and taking care of her beloved husband, Bert.
Without a school gym, Coach Trompeter spent fall afternoons in the rear parking lot teaching girls of varying athletic abilities how to volley the ball against the cafeteria brick wall and serve across the net. Her expectations were high, but her patience was never-ending. In addition to coaching, Barbara has always looked to help others, and, in recognition of her philanthropic work, she has been recognized with the Bell Award and the Sacred Heart Laurel Award. As a parish, we have benefitted from her talents as a member of the Arts and Environment Committee, as well as all of her “behind the scenes” work.
Coach Trompeter set an extraordinary example for her players and continues to be an inspiration for all.
We are installing a banner in the gym to honor her volleyball coaching career. Please stop by the St. Leonard Homecoming on September 10 between 5:00 and 6:30 to congratulate Coach Trompeter! She would love to see her former players.
