Faithful Citizenship
As we prepare to vote in this coming Tuesday’s election, it’s important to keep in mind the principles that should guide our consciences as we make our decisions. The US Bishops have an extensive document titled: Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. The Canadian Bishops have a shorter document that includes the following bullet points:
➢ Respect for the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death;
➢ Protection of religious freedom;
➢ Respect for the environment;
➢ The struggle for the eradication of poverty;
➢ Promotion of a fair and equitable economy for all;.
➢ Defense of the dignity of work and the fundamental rights of workers;
➢ Establishment of peace domestically and abroad
I thought they might be useful to review this weekend. Remember that the Kingdom of God is not pie in the sky. It’s our responsibility to use the tools that we have to bring it ever closer in the world. One of those tools is the vote. So exercise your right this Tuesday if you haven’t already.
